BEGINNING WITH THE BRANCH (top to bottom): Split between any knots, in the direction of the grain. The pith runs down the center of the branch. Making paring cuts.
A great technique to tighten control of your ax work is to choke up on the handle so that you are holding the ax as close as you can get to the axhead. This allows for close work without having to swing the tool. In this way, the axhead can be pushed into a cut, which can be a very useful technique for tight spaces and paring cuts that need to be precise. Using this technique, the cutting edge is more closely connected to your hand as you work than it is at the end of a long ax handle.
